Depression Test
This free depression test uses the PHQ-9 — one of the most widely used and researched depression screening questionnaires in the world. It takes about two minutes, runs entirely in your browser, and asks for no sign-up and no email. Nothing you enter leaves your device.
Over the last 2 weeks, how often have you been bothered by any of the following problems?
- 1.Little interest or pleasure in doing things
- 2.Feeling down, depressed, or hopeless
- 3.Trouble falling or staying asleep, or sleeping too much
- 4.Feeling tired or having little energy
- 5.Poor appetite or overeating
- 6.Feeling bad about yourself — or that you are a failure or have let yourself or your family down
- 7.Trouble concentrating on things, such as reading the newspaper or watching television
- 8.Moving or speaking so slowly that other people could have noticed — or the opposite, being so fidgety or restless that you have been moving around a lot more than usual
- 9.Thoughts that you would be better off dead, or of hurting yourself in some way
What this test measures
The PHQ-9 asks about the nine symptoms clinicians look at when screening for depression — mood, interest, sleep, energy, appetite, self-worth, concentration, movement, and thoughts of self-harm — over the past two weeks. Your answers are summed into a single score from 0 to 27 that maps to a severity band, the same way it is used in primary care.

Frequently asked questions
Is this depression test free?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no account or email, and runs entirely in your browser — your answers never leave your device.
Can this test diagnose depression?
No. The PHQ-9 is a screening tool, not a diagnosis. Only a qualified health professional can diagnose depression. Use your score as a starting point for a conversation with a doctor.
What is a normal PHQ-9 score?
Scores of 0–4 suggest minimal symptoms. 5–9 is mild, 10–14 moderate, 15–19 moderately severe, and 20–27 severe.
How long does it take?
About two minutes — nine short questions about the last two weeks.
